Alright, let’s talk about them Mazda sports cars, the old ones, you know? Not the newfangled stuff they got now, but the ones from back in the day. I seen a few of ‘em around, even though I ain’t no car expert or nothin’. Just tellin’ ya what I remember and what I heard.

First off, they got this car, the Cosmo Sport. Heard it was a big deal back then. They say it was the first real sports car Mazda ever made. Imagine that! A tiny little company, and they go and make a sports car! This was way back in 1967, long before you young’uns were even born.
- It had this weird engine, they called it a rotary engine.
- Sounded like a bumblebee in a tin can, but boy, it could go!
- Folks said it was real quick for its time.
Now, this rotary engine, it was somethin’ else. A fella named Wankel, that’s what they called him, he made it. Made it so the engine went round and round instead of up and down like most cars. Clever, I guess. This Cosmo, it wasn’t big, just a little two-seater, like them fancy cars you see in the movies.
Then there was the RX-7. That one came later, I think. People really liked those. They were sporty lookin’, you know, low to the ground and sleek. And that rotary engine, it was in those too, but a bit bigger and stronger, I reckon. They say it could really zip around. Heard some folks even raced ‘em. Guess it was a real fun car to drive.
Mazda, they weren’t always makin’ sports cars, though. They made all sorts of cars, big ones, small ones, even those little putt-putt cars. But these sports cars, they were somethin’ special. They showed that Mazda could build somethin’ exciting, somethin’ that made people turn their heads. There was also this car they called the Luce. Wasn’t really a sports car, more like a fancy sedan, but it was important for Mazda, made ‘em look a bit more high-class.
You know, Mazda, they always been a bit… different. They weren’t like them big car companies, always doin’ the same old thing. They tried new stuff, like that rotary engine. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t, but you gotta give ‘em credit for tryin’. They even had a slogan, somethin’ about makin’ a super sports car that nobody ever seen before. That’s what they said, anyways. I dunno, seemed like a lot of talk to me, but those old sports cars, they were pretty somethin’.
Mazda’s been around for a long time, a hundred years they say. That’s a lot of years makin’ cars. They made all kinds, sports cars, sedans, even vans. But those old sports cars, the Cosmo and the RX-7, they stand out. They got a history, you know? They ain’t practical, mind you. You can’t haul hay in ‘em, or take the whole family to town. But they got somethin’ special, a kinda spirit, maybe.
And now they got this new car, the Miata. Seen a few of those buzzin’ around. Tiny little thing, like a roller skate with an engine. Folks seem to like ‘em, though. But for me, it’s those old ones that really stick in my mind. The ones that made Mazda a name for itself, the ones that showed they could build somethin’ more than just a regular car. They built somethin’ fun, somethin’ that made you feel alive, even if you were just drivin’ down to the store for a loaf of bread.
So, that’s the story, as best as I can tell it. Mazda and their old sports cars. A bunch of little cars with funny engines that made a big noise and went real fast. And that’s all there is to it, far as I’m concerned.
