Well, let me tell ya ’bout them 1964 GMC pickup trucks. Back in the day, ain’t nothin’ fancy like these new cars you see now. Them old trucks, they were somethin’ else though, real workhorses, ya know?

What’s a 1964 GMC Pickup Truck, Anyway?
See, back in ’64, GMC, that’s a company that makes trucks, they built these pickups. They weren’t pretty like them city folks’ cars, but they got the job done. Hauled hay, wood, whatever ya needed. Strong as an ox, most of ‘em.
I remember seein’ some with a long bed, they called it a “fleet side.” Good for haulin’ more stuff, ya see. And the engines, oh boy, they had some power. Heard tell of a big ol’ 454 engine, and somethin’ called a turbo 400. Sounded like a beast, it did.
Different Kinds of ’64 GMC Pickups
Now, not all them trucks were the same. Some were smaller, like a half-ton, they called it. Means it could carry half a ton of stuff, I reckon. Then there were bigger ones, like the 2500, some even had those extra wheels in the back, the “dually” ones. Seen one fixed up like a fire truck once, flatbed and all. Guess they used it to fight them brush fires.
- Half-ton (like the 1/2 ton, 2×4) – good for regular folks.
- Three-quarter ton and one-ton – for haulin’ heavier loads.
- Dually – had them extra wheels in the back, real sturdy.
What Made Them Trucks Tick?
Engines, that’s what. Heard tell of a 230 cubic inch straight-six, made about 140 horses. And a bigger one, 292 cubic inches, with 165 horses. Don’t know much ‘bout that horsepower stuff, but more horses meant more power, that’s for sure. And transmissions, they had to be tough to handle all that work. Don’t ask me what kind, just knew they worked, mostly.
Where You Could Find Them Old Trucks?
Shoot, back then, you could find ‘em at the dealerships, places that sell cars and trucks. Nowadays? Heard tell of folks sellin’ ‘em on somethin’ called “eBay.” Said you can find just about anythin’ on there. Even parts, like them fog lights. Said they got a “money back guarantee” too. Fancy stuff.
Why Folks Liked ‘Em
Them 1964 GMC pickups, they were reliable. Not like these newfangled things that break down all the time. They were built to last, ya know? Tough as nails. And you could fix ‘em up yourself, didn’t need no fancy computers or nothin’. Just a wrench and some elbow grease. Folks still like ‘em now, even though they’re old. They call ‘em “classics.” Reminds ‘em of the good ol’ days, I reckon.
Finding a Good One Now
If you’re lookin’ for one now, well, good luck. They ain’t makin’ ‘em anymore. Gotta look around, check them online places, like that eBay I was tellin’ ya about. And be prepared to pay a pretty penny, especially if it’s in good shape. Them old trucks, they’re worth somethin’ now. And if you find one that’s been taken care of, well, you got yourself a real treasure.
Looking at other years of GMC pickup trucks?
Now, if you can’t find a 1964 GMC, some folks say that the newer ones, especially them made between 2016 and 2018 or even way back in 2004 and 2011 are just as good, but I wouldn’t know about that. They talk about a GMC Sierra, but that sounds like a fancy new name for a truck to me. It’s all the same I reckon, as long as it gets the job done. There was a place in Texas called Lubbock that sold ’em, maybe they still do.

So that’s the story on them 1964 GMC pickup trucks, as best as I can tell it. They were good trucks, tough and reliable. And they’re still around, if you know where to look.
