Okay, so I’ve been looking to get a bigger car for a while. My old sedan just wasn’t cutting it anymore, especially with the kids and all their stuff. I started thinking, “What’s sturdy, reliable, and has a ton of space?” Then it hit me: a police SUV! I mean, those things are built to take a beating, right?

My Search Begins
I hopped online and started searching for “police SUV for sale Texas.” I figured Texas would have plenty, being such a big state and all.
First thing I did was check out some general auction websites. Man, there was a lot to sort through. It was kind of overwhelming, honestly.
I looked at tons of listings. I really wanted something that wasn’t too beat up. I mean, I know they’re used, but I didn’t want one that looked like it had been through a war zone.
Narrowing It Down
After a few days of searching, I started to get a better feel for what was out there. I focused on a few specific models that I knew were popular with police departments. I figured those would be the easiest to find parts for down the road.
I spent hours just looking at pictures and reading descriptions. Some of them were pretty rough, with high mileage and lots of wear and tear. Others looked surprisingly good, almost like new!
The Inspection (and a Bit of a Headache)
I found a few that looked promising, so I got to work to go see them in person. I mean, you can’t buy a car without checking it out first, especially one that’s been used by the police!
The first one I saw was a bit of a letdown. It looked great in the photos, but in person, it had a lot of scratches and dents. The interior was pretty worn out, too. And the guy couldn’t tell me that much about the service records of the vehicle. I just got a funny feeling about the whole thing.
The second one was better. It was cleaner, had lower mileage, and the seller seemed more straightforward. I spent a good hour looking it over, checking everything I could think of. Still a bit hesitant to jump in without knowing the full extent of its service history.
Taking the leap!
Finally after all that searching and checking, I bit the bullet on a used Police Interceptor Utility. Needed a bit of TLC on the interior, the seats were pretty worn, but I’ve slowly been cleaning it all up. Got some seat covers, replaced the floor mats, and I’m thinking about getting the exterior detailed to get some of those minor scratches out.
It’s been a few weeks now, and I’m actually really happy with it. It’s got tons of space, feels super solid, and honestly, it’s kind of fun to drive. Plus, I feel like I got a pretty good deal, considering how much a new SUV would have cost.
