Okay, so, today I’m gonna share my experience with setting up a tent on top of my SUV. Yeah, it sounds a bit crazy, but trust me, it’s a game-changer for camping. I’ve always loved camping, but sleeping on the ground? Not so much. So, I started looking into other options and stumbled upon these SUV roof tents.

First thing I did was a ton of research. I mean, there are so many different types out there, it’s kinda overwhelming. You’ve got your pop-up ones, your family-sized ones, ones made from different materials. I even read some reviews of a few brands like Joytutus and KingCamp. It’s important to check your car’s roof weight limit, there’s a dynamic and a static limit. Anyway, after reading through maybe a dozen reviews and articles, I narrowed it down to a few that seemed like they’d work for my car and my needs.
Then came the hard part: choosing one. I ended up going with a polycotton tent ’cause it seemed like a good balance between durability and price. Plus, it’s supposed to be good for different weather conditions, which is a big deal for me since I like to camp year-round. Also a big factor was the size, and I saw that some tents are around 60 sq ft, which is pretty decent.
Once the tent arrived, I was like a kid on Christmas morning. I immediately started unpacking everything and laying it out. The instructions were, thankfully, pretty straightforward. Basically, you gotta install these brackets on your roof rack, and then the tent attaches to those.
Now, I’m not gonna lie, getting the tent up there was a bit of a workout. It’s not super heavy, but it’s bulky, so you definitely need two people. My buddy came over to help, and we managed to hoist it up and get it secured to the brackets. It took a few tries to get everything lined up properly, but once we did, it felt really solid.
The first time I actually used it was on a weekend trip to the mountains. Let me tell you, sleeping up off the ground is amazing. It’s so much more comfortable than a regular tent, and you get a pretty sweet view too. Plus, it’s surprisingly spacious inside. I could even stand up in some parts of it!
- Pros:
- Comfortable sleeping
- Great views
- Spacious
- Cons:
- Can be tricky to install
- Adds weight to your car
Overall, I’m super happy with my SUV roof tent. It’s made camping so much more enjoyable for me. I actually have a feeling that it will change the way I go camping from now on. If you’re thinking about getting one, I definitely recommend doing your research and making sure it’s compatible with your car. But if you find the right one, it’s totally worth it.

It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty darn close. I’ve used it a few times now, and it’s held up great. I’m excited to take it on more adventures!
