Alright, let’s talk about these tents you stick to your car, you know, the kind you can sleep in. Folks call ’em “tent connected to SUV” or somethin’ fancy like that. I just call ’em car tents, simple and easy.

Now, I ain’t no expert, but I seen a few of these things in my time. First off, why would ya want one? Well, I reckon it’s better than sleepin’ on the ground, ain’t it? No rocks pokin’ ya in the back, no creepy crawlies gettin’ in your hair. And if it rains, well, you’re up off the ground, dry as a bone… mostly. Sleeping comfy is important, you know?
- Kepping you off the ground.
- Staying dry when it rains.
- No rocks poking you.
There’s different kinds, ya see. Some are like big ol’ bubbles that pop up outta the back of your car. They say they’re good for four, maybe even six people. I don’t know about that, seems mighty crowded to me. But if you got a bunch of young’uns, I guess it’ll do. These ones, they call ’em “pop-up SUV tents” or somethin’. They say they fit best on them big cars, like the ones the city folk drive, you know, the “mid-size and full-size SUVs.” And those “hatchbacks” too, whatever those are.
Then there’s these other ones, the ones that go on top of your car. Like a little house up there! Now, them’s the ones I really like. Keeps you away from the critters for sure. But you gotta make sure your car can handle it, ya know? Can’t go puttin’ a heavy tent on a little ol’ car, it’ll squish it flat! They say you need these things called “roof bars” or a “roof rack.” Sounds complicated to me. But if you got ’em, you can slap one of them tents right on top. Just gotta make sure it ain’t too heavy, ya hear? Check the weight limit, that’s what they say. But most cars, they say, can hold a tent and a couple of grown folks no problem.
Why do folks like these rooftop tents? Well, they say it’s good for when you’re drivin’ way out in the sticks, you know, “off-road” they call it. Or when you’re goin’ on a long trip, an “expedition.” Guess it makes sense, keeps you off the ground, away from the snakes and such. And it gives you a nice flat place to sleep, which is more than I can say for some of them campsites I’ve seen.
Now, how do you pick one of these car tents? Well, that’s the tricky part, ain’t it? First off, you gotta think about how many folks you need to sleep. Like I said, them pop-up ones say they can hold a bunch, but I’d be squished like a sardine in there. Then you gotta think about your car. Can it handle a rooftop tent? And how much money you wanna spend? These things ain’t cheap, ya know. But I reckon it’s worth it if you like to camp and don’t want to sleep on the ground. A good night’s sleep is worth something, I tell ya.
Another thing to think about is how easy it is to set up. Some of them things, they say you can just pop ’em up in a few minutes. Others, well, they look like they’d take all day. And you don’t wanna be fussin’ with a tent when you’re tired and hungry, do ya? So, look for one that’s easy to put up and take down. That’s what I’d do, anyway.
So, there ya have it. My two cents on these tents you stick to your car. They ain’t for everyone, but if you like to camp and want a little bit of comfort, they might be just the ticket. Just do your research, ya hear? Don’t go buyin’ the first one you see. And make sure it fits your car and your needs. Make sure it fits your budget too!
And one last thing, don’t forget the bug spray! Them skeeters will eat ya alive, tent or no tent.
