So, the other day I got this wild hair to try something I hadn’t done since I was a kid – riding in the back of a pickup truck. I know, I know, it’s not exactly the safest thing, but I was curious to see if it still had that same thrill.

First things first, I had to find a buddy with a truck. Luckily, my neighbor, old man Johnson, still drives that beat-up Ford he’s had since the ’90s. I explained my crazy idea, and after a good chuckle, he agreed to take me for a spin around the block.
Before we took off, I did a little digging online about the laws. Turns out, it’s a bit of a gray area. Some places say it’s a no-go, others are cool with it as long as you’re not on the highway, and some require some kind of safety thingamajig. We decided to keep it super local, just to be safe.
- Climbed into the back, and man, it felt weird at first.
- No seatbelts, no nothing, just the open air.
- Johnson started the engine, and we were off.
The first few seconds were a little nerve-wracking. Every bump felt huge, and I gripped the sides like my life depended on it. But then, I started to relax. The wind was whipping through my hair, and the sun was shining down. It was kind of awesome, not gonna lie.
A Few Things I Noticed
- It’s way bumpier than I remembered.
- You really feel every little imperfection in the road.
- The wind is no joke – hold onto your hat!
- It’s surprisingly peaceful back there, in a strange way.
We only went around the block a couple of times, but it was enough to satisfy my curiosity. Would I do it all the time? Probably not. But it was a fun little trip down memory lane. It reminded me of being a kid, feeling all carefree and adventurous. Plus, it gave me a good story to tell, right?
Now, I’m not saying everyone should go out and hop in the back of a truck. You gotta be smart about it, check the laws in your area, and for crying out loud, don’t do anything stupid. But if you ever get the chance to do it safely and legally, it’s definitely an experience. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride!
