Alright, let’s talk ’bout them old SUVs, you know, the ones they used to make way back when. I ain’t no expert, but I seen a few in my time, and they sure don’t make ’em like they used to, that’s for sure.

Them Jeeps, They Started It All, I Reckon
Now, they tell me it all started with somethin’ called a Jeep Cherokee, back in ’84. Compact they called it, but it looked sturdy enough to me. Folks say it was the first real SUV, not like them farm trucks they had before. This one, it was lighter, they say, ’cause it wasn’t built like a truck underneath. Fancy that, huh? Makin’ somethin’ lighter to make it stronger, go figure. But them Cherokees, they were tough, I tell ya, seen ’em goin’ through mud and rocks you wouldn’t believe.
Them Good Ol’ Days, Sixties to the Nineties
- Back in the sixties, seventies, all the way to the nineties, that’s when them SUVs really took off.
- Started out as workin’ vehicles, ya know, for the army and the farm.
- Then folks started takin’ ’em for fun, drivin’ ’em up mountains and through the woods. That’s when they became somethin’ special, somethin’ more than just a work truck.
That Ford Explorer, Looked Mighty Fine
And then there was the Ford Explorer, come out in ’91, I think. Now that was a looker, all shiny and new. Folks said it was reliable too, which is more important than looks, if you ask me. If you wanted a good ol’ Ford SUV, that Explorer was the one to get. It was still kinda like a truck, they say, but it was fancy enough for city folks too.
Some Others I Remember, Names Like Raider and Such
Oh, and I remember seein’ somethin’ called a Dodge Raider, back in the late eighties. Don’t see many of them around anymore, but they were tough too. Imported, they said, from somewhere far away. There were others too, names I can’t quite recall, but they all had that same look, that same feel. Big, strong, and ready for anything.
Can’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To, That’s the Truth
Now, they try to make new SUVs look like the old ones, but it ain’t the same, no sir. They got all them newfangled safety features and emission controls, which I guess is a good thing, but it takes somethin’ away from ’em, you know? Them old SUVs, they were simple, they were tough, and they had character. You could fix ’em yourself with a wrench and a bit of elbow grease. Nowadays, you need a computer just to change the oil, or so I hear. They don’t make ’em like they used to, that’s the truth. And that’s a shame, if you ask me.
Good for Haulin’, Good for Adventurin’, Good for Just About Anything
Them old SUVs, they were good for everything. You could haul hay, you could go fishin’, you could take the whole family on a road trip. They weren’t fancy, but they were dependable. And that’s what mattered most. You knew they’d get you where you needed to go, no matter what. Rain or shine, mud or snow, them old SUVs, they’d just keep on goin’. And that’s somethin’ you don’t see much of anymore.
So, if you see an old SUV rumblin’ down the road, take a good look. You’re lookin’ at a piece of history, a reminder of a time when things were simpler, tougher, and maybe just a little bit better. And that’s somethin’ worth rememberin’, I reckon.
And that’s all I gotta say ’bout them old SUVs. They were somethin’ special, that’s for sure.
