How to Choose a Kayak Rack for Your Pickup Truck

Well, let me tell you, if you got a pickup truck and you wanna haul a kayak, you’re in for a bit of a job. You gotta think about how to set that thing up right, so you don’t end up breakin’ your kayak or scratchin’ up your truck. Now, I ain’t no expert, but I’ve seen folks do it, and I can share a few pointers.

First off, you need a good kayak rack. You can’t just toss it in the back like a sack of potatoes! No sir! You got options, like those heavy-duty aluminum racks that fit most pickup trucks like Ford F150s and Toyotas. They got adjustable arms that hold your kayak nice and steady. You can find them at places like Dick’s Sporting Goods, and they ain’t too pricey if you shop around.

Once you got your rack set up, you gotta load that kayak. Best way is to lift it up and balance it real good. You want it centered on the rack, not hangin’ off one side or the other. That’ll save you a lot of trouble on the road. A good trick is to have someone help ya. One person can hold the kayak while the other secures it. Always better to have an extra pair of hands.

Now, about securing the kayak. You’ll need some cam straps or tie-downs. These things are great! You just toss one end over the kayak, and then wrap it around the rack and back again. Make sure the buckle is up high, a few inches above the rack, so it don’t get all messed up. Tighten it up good, but not too tight, ’cause you don’t want to crush your kayak!

Here’s a little checklist to make sure you’re doin’ it right:

  • Make sure the kayak is balanced and centered.
  • Use good quality straps that won’t wear out.
  • Check the tightness of your straps before you hit the road.
  • Drive slow and steady, especially around corners.
  • Always double-check everything before you leave.

Now, if you’re planning to haul more than one kayak, you might need a bigger setup. Some folks go for vertical racks that hold multiple kayaks upright. It saves space, but you gotta be careful not to scratch them. You don’t want your beautiful kayaks lookin’ all beat up when you get to the water.

Sometimes, people use a truck bed extender too. It’s this neat little gadget that gives you extra support for longer kayaks. You just attach it to your hitch, and it extends out, so you got more room for that big ol’ kayak. It’s handy if you got a heavy load, ’cause it can hold up to 800 pounds. Just remember to fold it away when you ain’t usin’ it, or you’ll be takin’ out your neighbor’s mailbox when you back out!

So, before you head out to the lake or river, make sure you got everything sorted. It’s all about keeping that kayak safe, and your truck too. Ain’t nothin’ worse than getting somewhere and finding out your gear is all messed up!

In the end, a good kayak rack and some common sense go a long way. It don’t matter if you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, these tips will help you enjoy your time on the water without any worries. Now, go get that kayak out and have some fun!
