Hey everyone, it’s your boy back again with another one of my little adventures. So, the other day, I got this itch to try something new, you know? And what’s more different than getting a moped? I mean, they look fun, right? Zipping around town, feeling the breeze… Seemed like a good idea at the time.

But here’s the thing, I had no clue if I needed a special license for it. I mean, it’s not exactly a motorcycle, but it’s not a bicycle either. It’s kinda in this weird middle ground. So, I started doing some digging.
First, I hit up the internet, just Googling around like “do you need a license for a moped” and stuff like that. I found a bunch of articles, but they were all kinda confusing. Some said yes, some said no, and it all depended on where you live.
Then I remembered my buddy, Mike, he’s got one of those little scooter things. So I gave him a call. He told me that in our state, if the moped can’t go faster than 30 miles per hour and has a small engine, you don’t need a motorcycle license. Sounded simple enough.
Here’s the Catch
- If it’s over 50cc, it’s a motorcycle.
- If it goes faster than 30 mph, it’s a motorcycle.
- If it’s 150cc or bigger, you definitely need that motorcycle license.
So I went down to a local dealer, just to check things out, you know? I found this sweet little moped, it was blue, looked pretty slick. I asked the guy there about the license thing, and he confirmed what Mike said. This particular moped was good to go without a motorcycle license.
But then, I started thinking, what if I wanted to upgrade later? What if I got the need for speed? So, I asked the dealer about that too. He explained that if I wanted something faster or with a bigger engine, I’d have to get a motorcycle license, no way around it. It’s a whole process too, a written test, a driving test… the whole shebang.
After hearing all that, I decided to hold off on the moped for now. I mean, it seemed fun, but maybe not “go through all the trouble of getting a motorcycle license” fun. Plus, I live in Alabama, it seems like we need a motorcycle license regardless of the speed.
So, there you have it, my little moped adventure. I learned a lot, even though I didn’t end up getting one. The big takeaway? Always do your research, and maybe ask a friend who knows about this stuff. It can save you a lot of time and confusion! I hope you found this little story helpful, or at least entertaining. Catch you guys in the next one!
