Well now, I reckon most folks don’t know much about that North Hills Sports Car Club, so let me tell ya a bit. This here club’s been around for a long time, since 1957 to be exact. Yep, they been around long before most of us were even thought about, holdin’ meetin’s and gettin’ together for all sorts of events for them folks who just can’t get enough of sports cars. Ain’t nothin’ fancy about it, just a group of folks who love them fast cars and have a good time together.
The North Hills Sports Car Club, or NHSC for short, started all them years ago, back when people was still tryin’ to get their heads straight after the war. A bunch of folks who loved their cars and their engines got together and said, “Why not start a club?” They wasn’t lookin’ for nothin’ big, just a place to share their love of them cars with others. And that’s how it all started. Simple as that.
Every year, they hold all kinds of events. The biggest one, or at least the one that gets the most folks talkin’, is the Annual Autumn Leaf Autocross. Now, this here event’s been goin’ on for over 40 years. I reckon it’s one of them events folks circle on their calendars. The 42nd Annual Autumn Leaf Autocross was held just this past October, over at North Park Swimming Pool Parking Lot in Pittsburgh. The sun was shinin’, and folks were out there racin’ their cars around that parking lot like it was the Indy 500. Well, not quite, but you get the idea.
If you ask me, it’s somethin’ to see. All them fast cars goin’ around the track, squealin’ their tires and kickin’ up dust. Now, I ain’t much for racin’ myself, but I do like watchin’ all them folks get excited about it. You can see the passion in their eyes, the way they talk about their cars and their best times. It’s a real community, that NHSC.
Now, I ain’t sayin’ you gotta be a big-time racer to join up. Nope. All you gotta do is love cars, whether you’re a seasoned racer or just someone who likes a good Sunday drive. The club’s open to anyone who’s interested. They’re always lookin’ for new members, so if you feel like joinin’ in, you just gotta reach out to ’em. They got a website where you can sign up and find out more about the events they got comin’ up. They even got online registration, so you don’t even gotta leave the house to sign up. Ain’t that somethin’?
And let me tell ya, it ain’t all about racin’. They hold regular meetin’s too, where folks can sit around and talk shop, share stories about their cars, or maybe just chew the fat. They ain’t just a bunch of folks racin’ cars; they’re a community of people who share the same passion for these here machines. It don’t matter if you drive a brand-new Corvette or a dusty ol’ Mustang from the ’60s—if you got the love for them cars, you’re part of the club.
Now, I know some of y’all might be thinkin’, “Why should I join this club? Ain’t no reason for me to race.” Well, I reckon that’s up to you, but let me tell ya, it’s about more than just racin’. It’s about meetin’ folks who share the same interest, learnin’ a little somethin’ about cars, and just havin’ a good ol’ time. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that. If you got the time and you’re willin’ to give it a try, you might just find yourself comin’ back every year.
And let’s not forget about all the folks they help out, too. They’ve got themselves a history of raisin’ money for charity through their events. So, when you sign up for one of them races or even just come out to watch, you’re helpin’ out a good cause. Ain’t that a nice way to spend a Sunday?
So if you’re in Pittsburgh or somewhere close, and you feel like revvin’ up your engine and seein’ what the NHSC is all about, I say go ahead and give it a shot. You never know, you might just end up with a new hobby, a new group of friends, or even a shiny new trophy for your mantel. But most importantly, you’ll be part of somethin’ that’s been around for more than 60 years—now that’s somethin’ special.
So, get on over to their website, sign up, and get yourself ready for the next event. You don’t gotta be a pro driver to join, just someone who loves cars and wants to have a little fun. The North Hills Sports Car Club is waiting for ya, and who knows, you might just find yourself racin’ next time instead of just watchin’!
