Okay, so I’ve been seeing these skull cap motorcycle helmets everywhere lately, and I gotta say, I was curious. I mean, they look cool, kinda minimal, but I was also like, “Are these things even safe?” So, I decided to do a little experiment and get my hands on one.

First thing I did was hit up some online stores. I didn’t want anything fancy, just a basic black one to try out. Found one for a decent price, nothing crazy, and ordered it. It showed up a few days later, and I was ready to check it out.
When I pulled it out of the box, it was definitely lighter than my full-face helmet. Way lighter. I mean, it felt like almost nothing. It was just this simple shell, with some padding inside and a chin strap. I put it on, and it fit pretty snug. It covered the top of my head, obviously, but left my face totally exposed.
Testing it Out (Sort Of)
Now, I’m not gonna lie, I wasn’t about to go full-speed on my bike with this thing. I wanted to get a feel for it, but I also value my skull. So, I started with just wearing it around the house. Yeah, I know, kinda silly, but I wanted to see how it felt after a while.
After an hour or so, it was…okay. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it definitely felt different. Less…secure, I guess, than my regular helmet. I then took it for a short ride, just around my neighborhood, keeping it slow. The wind was definitely more noticeable, obviously, since my face was completely open. I could see everything super clear, which was a plus, but I also felt a bit exposed.
I did some very unscientific testing. I, uh, gently tapped my head against a wall. (Don’t judge!). It didn’t hurt, but it also didn’t feel super protective. I then imagined what it would be like to, you know, actually need a helmet, and that’s where I started to have some serious doubts.
My Final Thoughts (For Now)
- Pros: Lightweight, good visibility, looks kinda cool.
- Cons: Feels way less protective than a full-face helmet.
Honestly, after my little experiment, I’m still on the fence. It’s definitely comfortable and gives you a different riding experience, but the safety aspect is a big question mark for me. For now, I’m sticking with my full-face for any serious riding. Maybe the skull cap is okay for a super short, low-speed cruise, but anything more than that, and I’d want something with more coverage. It’s a trade-off, I guess: style and comfort versus feeling like my head is actually protected. Still thinking about it!
