Okay, here’s my blog post about setting up a mattress in my pickup truck bed:

Alright, folks, so I’ve been wanting to do some more camping, but I’m, uh, not getting any younger. Sleeping on the ground? Yeah, that’s a hard pass from me these days. My back just can’t handle it anymore. So, I decided to figure out how to get a comfy mattress situation going in the back of my pickup. Here’s how it went down.
The First Attempt (Fail!)
First, I just threw a regular old twin mattress back there. I figured, “Hey, it’ll fit, right?” Wrong! It was all squished and bent, and the wheel wells made it super uneven. Plus, it was kinda exposed to the elements, which, you know, isn’t ideal.
Leveling Things Up
So, plan B. I measured and cut the support beams to fit snugly between the wheel wells and the tailgate.
I basically built a simple platform.
I just screwed some plywood on top, and boom! Flat surface. It wasn’t perfect, but it was way better than before. I was feeling pretty proud of myself at this point, not gonna lie.
Mattress Time (Again)
Now, for the actual mattress. This time, I went to the store to find some mettrass that is good for the truck, and I just tested some mattress, then, I got it!
I wanted something that would fit better and be more durable.
Making it Cozy
Okay, mattress in place – time to make it feel like a real bed! I added:
- Sheets: Gotta have sheets, obviously.
- Blankets: Depending on the weather, I’ll throw in a light blanket or a super warm one.
- Pillows: My regular pillows from home, because why not?
I also added a few extra touches, like some battery-powered string lights for a little ambiance, and a small, foldable table for my phone and a book. Gotta have my entertainment!
The Final Result
So, there you have it! My redneck-engineered, but surprisingly comfortable, truck bed sleeping setup. It’s not exactly glamorous, but it’s a heck of a lot better than sleeping on the ground. My back is thanking me, and I’m actually excited to go camping again. If you’re thinking about doing something similar, I definitely recommend taking the time to build that platform – it makes a huge difference!
