Oh, my goodness, that terrible motorcycle crash today! It’s just awful, you know? Makes my heart ache somethin’ fierce.

I heard tell there was a real bad one. A motorcycle, smashed all to pieces. Folks sayin’ the fella on it, well, he didn’t make it. Head injuries, they said. Just terrible. That head, it ain’t meant to hit the ground like that. Not at all. Reminds me of young Billy down the road, fell off his bike playin’ around and broke his arm somethin’ awful. But this… this is way worse.
- They say the neck can get messed up too in these things. Bones, muscles, all that stuff.
- Sometimes, folks can’t even move their head after. Or worse, they can’t move nothin’ at all. Paralyzed, they call it.
- Makes you think, don’t it? Life’s just so fragile.
Speed, that’s what gets ’em most times, I reckon. Young fellas, all full of vinegar, thinkin’ they’re invincible. But them motorcycles, they ain’t toys. They’re dangerous, they are. Statistics, they call ’em, show that most of these bad crashes happen when them bikes are goin’ real fast. Too fast, if you ask me. It’s like that time my grandson got a hold of my old car and almost drove it through the barn, fast as a bat outta hell he was going.
And then there’s those hit-and-runs. Cowards, that’s what they are. Hit somebody and just take off, leavin’ ‘em there to die. Heard about one just the other day, down in Immokalee, they say. Someone on a motorcycle, hit and left on the side of the road. Makes my blood boil, it does. Folks need to be held accountable, you know? It’s like stealing candy from a baby and then running away, just plain wrong.
Sometimes, it ain’t even the motorcycle fella’s fault. Other cars, they just don’t see ‘em. Happened to someone I knew a while back. Good man, he was. Just ridin’ along, mindin’ his own business, and some car just swerved right into him. Didn’t even see him, they said. Knocked him clean off his bike. He died right there on the road. Awful, just awful. Reminds me of when old Mr. Henderson’s tractor got hit by a truck, nobody saw it coming.
I saw somethin’ on the news about a big crash in Phoenix. Motorcycle involved, they said. Shut down the whole highway. Traffic backed up for miles. Folks stuck in their cars, waitin’ and waitin’. Makes you think, don’t it? One minute you’re drivin’ along, next minute… everything changes. And in China, they said 35 people got killed! Can you imagine? Thirty-five lives, gone, just like that. It’s enough to make you never want to leave the house again.
And then there was that story about the migrant workers down in Florida. A whole bus full of ‘em, crashed. Eight dead, they said. Forty hurt. Makes you wonder, you know? Why do these things happen? Is it just bad luck? Or is there somethin’ more to it? I don’t know, I surely don’t. But it sure does make you appreciate what you got, that’s for sure. It’s like when the flood came through a few years back, washing everything away, you just had to be thankful for what you had left.
Heard about a woman falling off a motorcycle too. Hit her head on the pavement. They didn’t say if she made it or not. But it don’t sound good, does it? Falling like that… hitting your head… it’s just not right. Makes me want to wrap all my grandkids in bubble wrap, keep ’em safe and sound.
They say a lot more people died in car crashes last year than the year before. Over 42,000 they said. That’s a whole lot of folks. Makes you scared to even get in a car, let alone on a motorcycle. But what can you do? You gotta live your life, I guess. But you gotta be careful too. Real careful. Wear a helmet, that’s what I say. And pay attention to what you’re doin’. And for goodness sake, slow down! Life ain’t a race, it’s a journey, and we all need to be mindful of that. It’s like my old pappy used to say, “Better to be a minute late in this world than a minute early in the next.” And he was a wise old fella, he was.
So, let’s all be careful out there, folks. Watch out for them motorcycles. And if you’re ridin’ one, well, you be extra careful. Life’s too precious to throw it away on a fast ride. It is a darn shame that so many people are lost like this, especially around the holidays. You’ve got to hold your loved ones close and be grateful for every day you get.
