Okay, here’s my blog about how I made a bed platform for my SUV.

So, I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now, and I finally got around to it. I wanted a bed platform in the back of my SUV so I could sleep in it comfortably during road trips and camping. I did some research, watched some videos, and figured, “Hey, I can do this myself!” No need to pay for some fancy setup.
First thing I did was take out all the back seats, clean up the space back there. Then I measured the space I had to work with. I measured the length, width, and height, making sure to account for any weird angles or bumps in the floor. I jotted down all the measurements in my little notebook so I wouldn’t forget them. I mean, who can remember all that stuff, right?
- Plywood sheets – got a couple of sturdy ones from the hardware store.
- 2x4s – these were for the support frame.
- Hinges – I wanted some parts to fold, you know, for storage.
- Screws and bolts – a whole bunch of them.
- A saw – borrowed my neighbor’s, it worked great!
- A drill – got this one a while back, it’s my trusty tool.
- Measuring tape – gotta measure twice, cut once, as they say.
- Sandpaper – to smooth out any rough edges.
- Carpet – to make it comfy and not all wood-like.
Tools and Materials I Used:
After gathering everything, I started building the frame. I cut the 2x4s according to my measurements and screwed them together. It was like putting together a big puzzle, except with wood and power tools. I made sure the frame was solid and could hold my weight, plus some extra, just in case. Safety first, folks!
Once the frame was done, I cut the plywood to fit on top. This was the actual platform part. I used hinges to attach some sections, so I could fold it up when I needed to. This way, I could still use the space for other stuff when I wasn’t sleeping. I had to make sure everything lined up perfectly, which took a bit of fiddling around, but I got it eventually. I sanded down all the edges of the plywood so there were no splinters to poke me in my sleep.
To make it comfy, I added some carpet to the top of the plywood. I just glued it on there, which was pretty easy. It feels so much nicer than bare wood, and it looks better too. I even added some foam padding underneath in some spots for extra comfort. I’m all about that comfort life, you know?
Finally, I tested it out. I put the whole platform in the back of my SUV and made sure it fit snugly. I climbed in, laid down, and it was perfect! I even took a little nap to make sure it was sleep-worthy. Success! Now I can go on road trips and camp out without worrying about finding a place to sleep. I’ve already planned my next adventure!
It was a fun project, and I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. If you’re thinking about doing something similar, go for it! It’s totally doable, and it saves you a bunch of money. Plus, you get to brag about building it yourself. Win-win!
