Getting a motorcycle license in Alabama wasn’t as tricky as I thought it would be. I’m here to share my experience, just in case any of you are thinking about getting one too. You know, it’s always good to have a buddy who’s been there, done that, right?

So, first off, you gotta have a regular driver’s license. That’s the basic starting point. Then, for us folks who want to ride motorcycles, there’s this thing called a Class M endorsement. Think of it like an upgrade to your normal license that says, “Hey, I can handle two wheels!”
Now, there are two ways to go about getting this Class M thing. Either you pass a written test, which is basically a bunch of questions about motorcycle safety and laws, or you take a motorcycle safety course. Personally, I went with the course.
- Took the Course: I signed up for a motorcycle safety course. It was actually pretty fun. We learned a bunch of important stuff, like how to handle the bike, safety tips, and the rules of the road for motorcyclists.
- Got the Endorsement: After I finished the course, they gave me a certificate. I took that to the Department of Public Safety, and boom – they added the Class M endorsement to my driver’s license.
One thing I learned is that you gotta be at least 16 to get the full, unrestricted Class M license. If you’re 14 or 15, you can still get a restricted one, but it’s for smaller bikes, like 5 horsepower or less. Kinda like training wheels, I guess. And your motorcycle must have a working headlight, taillight, and brake light.
About the written test – I heard from some buddies that it can be a bit tough if you don’t study up. There’s a manual you can read, but it’s a bit dry. Luckily, I found an app that helps prepare you for the test. It’s called Zutobi, and it made studying a lot easier.
Honestly, the whole process wasn’t that bad. The safety course was even kind of enjoyable, and now I can ride legally in Alabama. If any of you are thinking about it, I’d say go for it! Just remember to be safe out there – it’s a whole different ball game on two wheels.
So, yeah, that’s my story of getting a motorcycle license in Alabama. Hope it helps someone out there. Ride safe, everyone!
