So, I’ve been messing around with these old Tonka trucks lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a trip down memory lane. I wanted to see if I could restore a couple to their former glory, you know, make ’em look like they just rolled off the factory floor.

Digging Them Out
First things first, I had to find some. I started hitting up garage sales, flea markets, and even checked out a couple of online auction sites. Scored a few that were in pretty rough shape, but hey, that’s half the fun, right?
The ones I ended up with were seriously beat up. Rusted, dented, missing parts…you name it. Looked like they’d been through a warzone, honestly.
Taking Them Apart
- Next, I carefully took the trucks apart. It is not diffcult.
- I made sure to keep all the screws and little pieces organized.
- I used some small containers, ziploc, so I wouldn’t lose anything.
Cleaning and Fixing
Then came the really messy part: cleaning. I used some steel wool and rust remover to tackle the rusty parts. Took some elbow grease, let me tell ya. Once the rust was gone, I used a hammer and some other tools to bang out the dents as best as I could. I even had to fabricate a couple of missing parts using some scrap metal I had lying around. It is tiring!
Painting and Putting It Back Together
After all that, it was time for the fun part: painting! I found some spray paint that matched the original Tonka colors. I applied a few coats, letting each one dry completely before adding the next. Once the paint was dry, I carefully reassembled the trucks, making sure everything was nice and tight.
Finally,I put the wheels back on and stepped back to admire my handiwork. Man, they looked amazing! Like they were brand new. It was a lot of work, but seeing those old Tonkas shining again made it all worthwhile. It’s like bringing a piece of history back to life, you know?
