Okay, so I finally decided to get my motorcycle permit here in New York. I’ve been wanting to ride for years, and it was time to make it happen. The whole process seemed a little daunting at first, but it turned out to be pretty straightforward.

Studying for the Written Test
First things first, I needed to pass the written test. I grabbed the New York State Motorcycle Operator’s Manual online – it’s free, which is always a bonus. I skimmed through the whole thing, honestly, I didn’t read every single word, but I made sure to pay extra attention to the sections on safe riding practices, traffic laws, and handling different road conditions.
There are also tons of practice tests online. I took a bunch of those, just to get a feel for the questions. They definitely helped me identify areas where I needed to study a bit more. Don’t skip this part!
Taking the Written Test
Once I felt somewhat ready(I mean, who ever feels totally ready for a test?), I went down to the DMV. Be prepared for a wait, because, well, it’s the DMV. Bring all your documents! For me the most important one is the proof of identity, and residency.
The test itself was on a computer. It was mostly multiple-choice, and a lot of it was common sense stuff, but the studying I did definitely helped. I finished, held my breath, and… I passed! Huge relief.
Getting the Permit
After passing the written test, I paid the permit fee, and they took my picture. Then, bam! I had my temporary permit, printed out right there. The actual permit card came in the mail a couple of weeks later.
With the permit, there are restrictions, of course. I can only ride during daylight hours, and I have to have a licensed motorcycle rider with me. I also had to get someone to follow me.
Next Steps: Road Test!
Now that I’ve had my permit for a while, and I’ve been practicing a lot with experienced riders, I’m gearing up for the road test. I’m nervous, but I also feel pretty confident. I’ll update you all on how that goes when I finally take it!
This whole thing has been a learning experience, and I’m loving every minute of it (except maybe the DMV wait times!). If you’re thinking about getting your motorcycle permit in New York, go for it! Just do your homework, be prepared, and stay safe.
