Alright, so you wanna know about them Honda motorcycle intake valve thingamajigs, huh? Them little metal pieces inside the engine? Well, let me tell ya, it ain’t rocket science, even though them city folks like to make it sound fancy.

What’s an Intake Valve Anyway?
Think of it like this, your mouth. You open your mouth to eat, right? The engine’s mouth is the intake valve. It opens up to let the air and gas go in, so the engine can chug along and do its thing. The size of that mouth, that’s what they call “dimensions.” How big it is, see?
Different Bikes, Different Sizes
Now, not all Honda motorcycles got the same size mouth, I mean, intake valves. A little bitty bike, like them scooters them young’uns ride around town, it’ll have smaller ones. A big ol’ hog, one of them bikes that sounds like thunder, it’ll have bigger ones. Makes sense, right? More air and gas gotta go in for more power.
I heard some fellas talking about them Honda XL350s. They were yapping about the exact sizes, measuring them and all. Sounded like a whole lotta trouble to me. Why bother with all them numbers, as long as it runs good, that’s all I care about. But them fellas online, they like to share all them numbers. Said something about “optimizing performance.” Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me. But they did say if you wanna know the exact size, you gotta look in the manual or somethin’. Or find someone who’s already messed with it.
Finding the Right Size
- First thing, you gotta know what kinda bike you got. Can’t just guess, you know. Is it a little Honda, a big Honda, an old Honda, a new Honda? Gotta be specific.
- Then, like I said, check the manual. That book that comes with the bike, the one nobody reads? Yeah, that one. It’s got all the numbers and whatnot. If you lost it, well, you can probably find it online these days. Them youngsters are always on their phones. I bet they can find it.
- Or you can ask around. Go to a motorcycle shop, talk to the fella there. Or find a forum online. Them internet forums are full of folks talking about this kinda stuff. You might even find someone who’s got the same bike as you and knows the sizes right off the bat.
Why Does Size Matter?
Well, if the mouth ain’t the right size, the engine won’t run right, will it? Too small, it won’t get enough air and gas. Too big, well, I don’t rightly know what happens then, but it can’t be good. And sometimes them valves get old and worn out. Then they gotta be replaced. And you gotta make sure the new ones are the right size.
I saw a fella on the internet talking about his CRF250R. He was looking for the valve clearance, something about how much space is there when the valve is closed. He was saying he checked online and couldn’t find the numbers and asking if someone with a manual could help him out. See? Even them internet fellas gotta ask for help sometimes. Another fella was talking about valve adjustments on an XR250. He even had pictures. Looked mighty complicated to me, but he seemed to know what he was doing. He was talking about how his lowest clearance was “.0045”. Don’t ask me what that means, it’s all Greek to me.
And it ain’t just the size that matters. It’s the lift too, how far that valve opens up. And a bunch of other things them engineer fellas worry about. They were talking about how valve diameters and lift values depend on a lot of fancy design stuff. Said for a 2-valve engine, the intake valve is usually 0.35 to 0.5 times the cylinder bore. And the exhaust valve is 0.28 to 0.43 times. See? All them numbers again. My head’s spinning just thinking about it.
More Than Just Valves
And you know, while we’re talking about these bikes, them new ones, they got all sorts of fancy stuff. Like that Honda ADV 160. Heard tell it’s got a big ol’ space under the seat, almost 8 gallons they say. For storing stuff, I guess. Back in my day, you just strapped your stuff to the back of the bike with a rope and hoped it didn’t fall off.
So, there you have it. A little bit about Honda motorcycle intake valve dimensions, from a plain old gal who don’t know much about it. But I know enough to tell you to find the right size, check your manual, ask around, and don’t go messing with it if you don’t know what you’re doing. Leave it to the fellas who know their way around an engine.
