Well, let me tell ya, them Buick pickup trucks ain’t somethin’ I thought I’d ever see. Back in the day, Buick wasn’t much known for makin’ trucks. It was all about them shiny cars, them big sedans that folks used to drive to church on Sundays, ya know? But I reckon time changes everything, and even them folks at Buick started thinkin’ about trucks, though it didn’t happen overnight.

Back in 1911, Buick made them Model 2 trucks, ‘bout 902 of ‘em. Now, that’s not a whole lot, but it sure was a start. And in 1912, they made a few more, 761 of ‘em to be exact. But like I said, Buick was more about them fancy cars, not trucks. So, after a few years, them pickup trucks just kinda faded outta Buick’s plans. I reckon they figured the folks who wanted trucks would go to Chevrolet or GMC or one of them other brands.
Now, fast forward to today, and Buick’s still stickin’ to them fancy cars and SUVs. They got them Enclaves and Envision models, real nice, real comfortable, but still, no trucks. You won’t be seein’ a Buick pickup truck sittin’ in any driveway, not in the newer models anyway.
But ya know, it ain’t that Buick didn’t think about it. Ed Welburn, that fella who oversees the global design for GM, he even said he could imagine a Buick pickup truck. Ain’t that somethin’? Well, I guess maybe one day they’ll make a pickup, who knows. But right now, they just ain’t botherin’ with it. Instead, they’re focused on them shiny SUVs. I reckon folks like them better these days anyways.
Now, if ya look at all the trucks that Buick coulda made, there’s some folks who’d argue the trucks could’ve been real nice. Them trucks from back in the day mighta been good for the farm, or haulin’ hay or cattle, or maybe just goin’ to town to pick up supplies. Buick always did make quality stuff, so I imagine them trucks coulda been sturdy enough. But, like I said, they ain’t stickin’ to trucks, just them nice SUVs.
If Buick ever did make a pickup truck, well, they’d have to figure out what makes it special. I reckon it’d have to be a mix of style and power. The people want somethin’ that looks good but also gets the job done. Maybe a truck with that same class that them old Buicks had, but with enough power to haul just about anything. Now, wouldn’t that be somethin’?
And let’s not forget the folks who like to drive their trucks long distances, like across them open highways or down them dusty country roads. A Buick pickup truck might need to focus on fuel efficiency too, something that don’t burn through the gas too quick. Lord knows, gas prices are high enough already.
But like I said, don’t go holdin’ your breath for one of them Buick pickup trucks just yet. They seem to be more interested in the cars and the SUVs. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if one day they decide to roll out a truck, but that’s somethin’ we’ll have to wait and see. Maybe it’ll be just like them old Model 2 trucks, a bit of a surprise, but a good one.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a truck, I’d say go on down to GMC or Chevrolet and get you one of them. But if you like them Buicks, well, you’ll have to settle for a nice SUV for now. Maybe someday, they’ll surprise us all with a shiny new Buick pickup truck, who knows?
