Hey everyone, it’s your boy back again with another project. This time, I’ve set my sights on a real classic – a 1955 GMC pickup truck. Yeah, you heard that right, a piece of history! Let me tell you, I was stoked when I first laid eyes on this beauty. I started by just walking around it, taking it all in. The bold chrome grille, those rounded fenders – it’s like stepping back in time. But, it was clear that this truck had seen better days.

Getting Started
First things first, I popped the hood to see what I was dealing with. It’s got the standard 248.5-cid engine, a six-cylinder. Apparently, in ’55, GMC also offered a V8 option, the Pontiac 287 cid, but this one’s got the classic setup. I noticed it’s still on the old 6-volt positive ground electrical system, which is pretty cool, but also a bit of a headache since it’s not something you see every day. I decided I needed to learn all I could about that system.
Diving Deeper
I spent a good chunk of time just researching, you know? I dug through forums and old manuals, trying to wrap my head around the quirks of these older models. There’s a forum where folks discuss their 1955-1959 Chevy and GMC pickups – a real goldmine of information! I found threads about custom builds, others looking for parts, and even discussions about rearview mirrors. It’s a whole community out there, which is awesome.
Assessing the Project
After getting a better understanding of what I was working with, I started to assess the truck’s condition. It’s in decent shape for its age, but there’s definitely work to be done. I made a list of things that needed attention – some rust here and there, the engine needs a good once-over, and the interior could use some love.
Making a Plan
With a clearer picture of the project, I began to plan out the restoration. I decided to take it one step at a time. The first major task was to tackle the engine. I gathered all the tools I thought I’d need, rolled up my sleeves, and got to work. It was a slow process, taking things apart, cleaning, and replacing worn-out parts. I hit a few snags along the way, but that’s all part of the process, right?
The Electrical System
Next up, I turned my attention to that 6-volt system. I spent hours tracing wires, testing connections, and trying to make sense of the old wiring diagrams. It was a real test of patience, but I managed to get it sorted out. It felt like a major victory when I finally got everything working as it should.
Moving Forward
With the engine and electrical system in better shape, I started to feel more confident about the rest of the project. There’s still a lot to do, but I’m taking it one day at a time. I’ve already started on the bodywork, sanding down rust spots and prepping for paint.
Restoring this 1955 GMC pickup truck is a labor of love. It’s challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. Every little bit of progress feels like a huge accomplishment. I’m excited to see this old truck come back to life and to share the journey with all of you. Stay tuned for more updates!
