Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about them 1950 GMC pickup trucks. Them old trucks, they were somethin’ else, y’know? Back in the day, folks used ’em for everythin’. Carryin’ hay, takin’ stuff to market, just gettin’ around. They weren’t fancy, no sir, but they were tough as nails, I tell ya.
Now, these GMC fellas, they made their own engines for these trucks. That’s what I heard, anyways. Said they were special. Even though they looked a lot like them Chevy trucks, the GMCs had their own look. Different grilles, you know, that thing on the front. And the tailgates, the hubcaps, and the colors too. All different.
- Strong engines
- Different look from Chevy
- Tough and reliable
For a little half-ton pickup, like the ones most folks had, they put in a 228 six-cylinder engine. That’s what they called it, a “six-cylinder.” Sounded pretty powerful to me. Don’t know much about them engine things, but I know they could haul a load. Yep, they could haul a load alright.
I remember seein’ a fella open up a shop in Lubbock, Texas, sellin’ these trucks. Lubbock, that’s a big place, lots of folks needin’ trucks. He had all kinds, I reckon. New ones, used ones, all shined up and ready to go. Bet them trucks cost a pretty penny back then, even though they weren’t as fancy as what they got now.
Used 1950 GMC trucks, well, they’re still around, believe it or not. I saw somethin’ on the internet the other day, my grandson showed me. Said there’s a website, somethin’ called “*,” and they got a whole bunch of them old trucks for sale. Can you believe it? Some of them fellas are askin’ for a lot of money, but I saw one for just three dollars! Three dollars! Probably needs a whole lotta work though.
They say you can find these trucks all over the place. Near you, they say. Well, “near you” is a big word, ain’t it? Depends on where you’re at, I guess. But it sounds like there’s still a fair few of them old GMCs kickin’ around.
Now, these old trucks, they ain’t got none of that fancy stuff they got today. No power steering, no air conditionin’, no fancy radios. Just a steering wheel, some pedals, and a bench seat. But that’s all you needed, y’know? They were workhorses, not show ponies. You could depend on ’em to get the job done, no matter what.
And that’s what I ‘preciate about them 1950 GMC pickup trucks. They were honest, hard-workin’ machines. They weren’t flashy, but they were reliable. And they were a part of everyday life for a lot of folks. They helped build this country, I tell ya. They helped farmers, ranchers, and businessmen alike. They were a true American icon, and that’s somethin’ to be proud of.
If you ever get a chance to see one of these old trucks up close, take a good look. They don’t make ’em like that anymore, that’s for sure. They’re a piece of history, a reminder of a simpler time, when things were built to last. And that’s somethin’ worth rememberin’, don’t you think?
So, that’s my two cents on them 1950 GMC pickups. They might not be the fastest or the prettiest, but they were tough, reliable, and they got the job done. And that’s more than you can say for a lot of things these days.
